I confess I have never been more confused at my hitherto faithful ally's assault! I held up my arms to parry this unthinkable attack to try and calm Holmes. He curiously tried to dodge me but I followed his move and blocked the door to try and quell this madness. The confusion only intensified with a lady’s scream and thunderous sounds outside our very door.

"In God's name step aside Watson, there is murder afoot outside.” I desperately now tried to get out the way of the door but somehow banged into Holmes again. Eventually he wrenched the door open as we saw the rear of a willowy dark-haired man vaulting down the stairs. I made for the call of distress, Holmes to pursue the man, and again we became entwined. An almost comical state of affairs, and enough delay for Holmes to abandon pursuit, as his quarry would have slipped into the teeming metropolis outside.

We both dashed into the open door of the rooms opposite. I fell upon the delicate beauty I had glimpsed before, who was now prostrate on the floor. My worst fears were allayed, and I called out to Holmes that the lady had merely fainted and appeared to be physically unharmed.

"We came just in time to prevent an act of barbarism, Watson. I shall send a note to Lestrade with the details and motive of our villain so Scotland Yard can ward off any further criminality.”

"Good heavens Holmes, did you know of this before?” I exclaimed, racing to catch up with events.

"Ah Watson, of course you came home to find me catching the wisps of villainy afoot. There is an order and a sound to a law-abiding building such as this. Whilst I cannot fully explain, the patterns and reverberations altered slightly and I sensed foul play was afoot.

Those irregularities came like a crescendo when I realised that imminent violence was just yards from where I sat and launched myself towards the impending savagery.”

"This morning's paper; a note from my brother Mycroft; this interrupted correspondence; and this empty glass made identifying our absconding gentleman a trifle to identify.”
